Voices of the Air est une adaptation musicale du poème de Katherine Mansfield pour mezzo-soprano et piano. La mélodie a été composée en juillet 2023 pour Sherry Grant et Tessa Romano. Chaque strophe alterne avec un micro-interlude pour piano seul, ce qui donne à la mélodie une forme ondulante, où la musique des couplets tend vers un mouvement minimal tandis que celle du piano génère plus d'activité, comme une vague, en référence à la « mer et au vent » du texte. Parallèlement à mon travail sur Voices of the Air, je me préparais à jouer en concert à l'alto une œuvre d'Arnold Trowell qui a pesque certainement été composée du vivant de Katherine Mansfield. Comme l'écrivaine connaissait bien la musique de Trowell, il me sembla approprié, lors de la mise en musique du poème, de m'immerger dans ce monde sonore particulier. Voices of the Air a été écrit en 1916. Le frère de Katherine Mansfield, Leslie Heron Beauchamp est décédé le 6 octobre 1915 à l'âge de 21 ans et est enterré au cimetière militaire de Ploegsteert Wood, en Belgique.

But then there comes that moment rare
When for no cause that I can find
The little voices of the air
Sound above all the sea and wind.

The sea and wind do then obey.
And sighing sighing double notes
Of double basses, content to play
A droning chord for the little throats.

The little throats that sing and rise
Up into the light with lovely ease
And a kind of magical sweet surprise
To hear and know themselves for these —

For these little voices: the bee, the fly
The leaf that taps — the pod that breaks —
The breeze on the grass-tops bending by —
The shrill quick sound that the insect makes —

The insect hanging upon a stem
And the beads of water dropping along
The mosses, the big rocks and diadem
And its infinite silent song.

The silent song so faint so rare
That the heart must not beat
Nor the quick blood run
To hear the inspired voices of the air.
